I have worked as a technical support help desk a few years ago and my expertise dealt with routers and setting them up so that home users would be able to use the Internet. Most people at that time were still fairly new to the world of computers and the Internet and so much calls were coming in from those seeking help in setting up their routers and computers. During this time, people were shifting from dial-up connections to DSL. So I answered a lot of calls on how they could connect to the Internet without having to make a manual connection.

I admit, it was also all new to me. I was used to having a dial-up connection at home at was amazed on how fast broadband speeds were. Where before it took time for pages to load, at work with a broadband connection I could view pages in a matter of seconds. Best of all, I could view the whole web page design. A lot of people usually complained that the page that they were viewing was incomplete or partially loaded. This could be associated with a lot of things, such slow connections or browser incompatibility.

It was also the rise of social network sites. People before did not worry about their accounts being hacked or stolen. People were more concerned with virus protection since at that time a lot of operating systems were quite unstable and this created a challenge for us handling technical support calls. Since what we provided was only the Internet connection, we had to ask our customers to contact their computer manufacturers if the problem lies with their computers.

People would also call in to inquire about web page design. A lot of people were taking advantage of the technology of the Internet and they knew that they could start good businesses with it. There were various free web page design that customers could avail of at that time. There was also a tutorial that they could use so that they would know how to make a layout or a web page design. Similarly with creating Internet connections, we would also receive calls that the tool for creating the web pages were not working. Again, the problem is with the computer and the type of software that is installed that is needed for creating the designs. For this we again had to refer them to software manufacturers since this was beyond our scope or expertise.
